Carrie Gracie is paid £92,000 per year

I hadn't even heard of Carrie Gracie until Guido posted this earlier today. During a rather robust exchange with Lord Foulkes on the BBC News Channel she was challenged about what her salary is (he was trying to embarrass her) and she said that she earns £92,000 per year.

Now fair play to her for coming straight out and saying it but that is almost 4 times the national average salary. For a newsreader that I would guess most people have never heard of on a digital TV channel. Is that not perhaps a bit high for a junior journalist paid for from the license fee? It certainly makes me wonder what the more well known presenters are paid.

Incidentally, I can imagine that Paxman, Humphries et. al. will also be asked this now that Ms Gracie has set the precedent. It will be interesting to see how they handle it if it does come up.

It is OK for some.

Junior journalist! I think not! Carrie Gracie is fluent in Chinese, hence her input into the Beijing Olympics, and her commentary in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

£92,000 for a gormless airhead to read an autocue. That is some going.

So she speaks Chinese - big deal.

unbelievable, a virtually unheard of newsreader is paid 92k for reading stuff out aloud.
this is licence fee payers money.
a (non-medical bioresearch) Dr only gets 23-30k a year after 8 years of training
