Electoral reform demo today 2pm, Trafalgar Square

There is a demo today at 2pm in Trafalgar Square to protest against our current electoral system and how it has yet again distorted the results of the latest election.

The Facebook group for the protest is here and the details are copied in below.

----------------------------------------------

The election has produced another outrageous result with a massive mismatch between votes and seats. Our voices have been silenced.

- Millions of votes have been wasted.

- People have been turned away from polling stations.

No matter what the colour of your political stripes, the current system is a democratic travesty and can’t continue.

>> Gather Saturday 2pm May 8th in reaction to the election result in Trafalgar Square to demand reform and a fair voting system.

This must be the last election under our broken system.

Meet at 2pm in Trafalgar Square, wear purple - the traditional colour of campaigns for the suffrage who throughout the years have struggled to deepen democracy. Billy Bragg, John Kampfner, Jean Lambert and others will be there to say a few words.

>> Invite your friends to attend the rally in reaction to the result - if enough of us get involved the demand for change will be irresistible!

The people need to be at the head of any initiative for democratic reform. We must decide what proposals should be considered to change the voting system through a Citizens Convention, and we must be allowed to decide whether to adopt them in a referendum. No more stitch ups!

THE POLICE HAVE DENIED US PERMISSION TO PROTEST IN PARLIAMENT SQUARE, THE CLEAREST POSSIBLE PROOF THAT THIS IS NOT OUR PARLIAMENT. INSTEAD WE'LL MEET IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE AT 14:00 AND TAKE THINGS FROM THERE

That was fun. The highlight was standing in Smith Square when everybody chanted "We want to see Nick" or words to that effect. I would have laughed out loud had Nick Griffin emerged from the building :)
